the first week of aw80 came to a close, and another monday is in full swing here at ywam base camp in oxford. my lack of posts on this blog is a direct result of our busy schedule, my trying to settle in, and the fact that there is always something fun to do during free time... :)
i'm finally getting used the routine around here. we wake up EARLY (about 6:45am), grab breakfast, and then i have breakfast clean-up from 7:30-8am. everyone has a personal work duty that is ours to perfect during the 11 weeks spent here in new zealand...and doing dishes happens to be mine!
after that we have about 30 minutes to be alone. this is time set aside in our schedule for us to dive into the bible, pray, or just rest. class starts a little before 9, and we are in lecture until lunch at 1. after lunch the schedule varies depending on the day. mondays we have work duties for a few hours. since we are living in community, we are responsible for keeping our home running. last week i worked in the garden...i'll find out what today's duty is in about 30 minutes! other days we have more lectures, free time, or outreach preparation. on fridays we go into christchurch for the day, which is lots of fun. it's such a great city!
as for my experiences last week: there is so much to tell! i'll try to be concise. lectures were great. we learned about intercessory prayer, hearing God's voice, worship, and more. i've gotten to know some amazing people already! emrie and i have been spending a lot of time with katy crane from mobile, alabama. she has such a kind heart, and an adventurous spirit that meshed with us from the moment we met her. there are many other friends i could write about, but for now check out these pictures of us having fun together!
this weekend started with friday in christchurch. we explored the city together, ate lunch, saw the sights and took lots of pictures. friday night a few of us ventured into town and hung out at a local pub. pool tables, tv, a juke box and diet coke WITH ICE...i have a feeling we will likely haunt this place a lot during the next 3 months.
saturday we split into groups and went different places around the canterbury province. emrie, myself, katy, kenny, and 3 leaders (kieren, jeremy and kim) decided to hit the beach...and it was a perfect day. we laid out, climbed rocks, got an american hotdog and throughly enjoyed the spectacular views around us. despite new zealand's extremely strong rays, all of us managed to walk away without sunburn! thank you spf.
the rest of the weekend was spent hanging out, bike riding, eating a good meal at a local restaurant, visiting the pub again, and catching a really amazing sunset over the hills. all in all, this week was the perfect introduction to my time here in oxford, and if this morning's lecture is any indication of what's to come, this week is going to be just as awesome.
